6th Parliament taking Steps to Enhance Regional Integration

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament’s sixth legislature has taken a significant step towards promoting regional integration by addressing the high cost of airfare in West Africa. During a joint committee meeting in Lome, Togo, Hon. Sako Momadu, Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Infrastructure, Energy and Mines, Agriculture, Environment, and Natural Resources, highlighted the need to reduce airfare costs to facilitate travel and strengthen ties between ECOWAS member states.

Airfares in West Africa are among the highest on the African continent, making it difficult for citizens to travel and conduct business across borders. In some cases, it’s cheaper to travel outside the African continent than between two ECOWAS member states. This situation undermines the vision of a borderless and interconnected region.

To address this challenge, the ECOWAS Parliament is exploring strategies to reduce airfare costs, including: Regulatory Reforms: Reviewing and harmonizing aviation regulations to promote competition and reduce costs. Infrastructure Development: Improving airport infrastructure to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Tax Policies: Reviewing tax policies to reduce the burden on airlines and passengers. Airline Operations: Encouraging efficient airline operations and competition.

The 6th Parliament is full of expectation that with access to cheap air fares, the region will experience accelerated Regional Integration which will facilitate travel and strengthen ties between member states. It will increase Increase trade and investment opportunities as well as enhance cultural exchange and tourism.

The ECOWAS Parliament’s efforts to reduce airfare costs are crucial for promoting regional integration and economic growth. working together, member states can create a more interconnected and prosperous region. As Hon. Sako Momadu noted, “We are gathered here to examine together strategies and policies likely to contribute to reducing the cost of airfare in our sub-region.” With a collaborative approach, ECOWAS can achieve its vision of a borderless and interconnected region.
