Angola is set to honour Nigeria’s former Heads of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed and President Olusegun M. Obasanjo, with the Class of Honor medal, as part of its 50th Independence anniversary celebrations. Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari will also receive the Peace and Development medal.
The decoration ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Luanda, Angola, recognizes the significant contributions of these eminent personalities to Angola’s political emancipation and lasting peace.
General Murtala Muhammed’s leadership and Nigeria’s steadfast support played a crucial role in Angola’s independence, defying global pressure and aligning Nigeria with African freedom forces. His moral clarity and swift action galvanized continental solidarity, isolating apartheid South Africa’s interventionist agenda.
The Angolan government and people express deep appreciation for Nigeria’s selfless sacrifice in supporting Angola’s freedom and independence cause. Nigeria provided political, financial, and material support, offering 20 scholarships to young Angolans and demonstrating its commitment to African liberation.
The Embassy of Angola in Nigeria will also celebrate the Golden Jubilee with a Round Table in Abuja, featuring prominent Nigerians and diplomats.
