A major milestone has been achieved in the push for a borderless Africa, as the African People’s Petition for a Borderless Africa has surpassed 10,000 signatures. This people-led movement, part of the #BorderlessAfrica campaign, is calling for free movement, unity, and dignity across Africa.
The petition is a response to the slow progress in implementing the African Union Free Movement Protocol, adopted in 2018. Despite commitments under AfCFTA, only 4 AU Member States have ratified the protocol, and nearly half of Africans still require visas to travel within Africa.
Africans Rising, the organization behind the petition, is urging African citizens, media institutions, and policymakers to join the movement and demand action. The petition demands urgent ratification and implementation of the AU Free Movement Protocol, removal of visa barriers, and people-centered mobility policies.
“Free movement is not a threat to Africa’s security or sovereignty; it is a foundation for integration, peace, shared prosperity, and reparative justice,” said Africans Rising.
The petition is open for signature, and Africans are encouraged to join the crusade for a borderless Africa.
