In a bold move, ECOWAS Parliament committees have called for the abolition of the residence permit system, citing it as a hindrance to the free movement of citizens within the region. This recommendation is a step in the right direction towards achieving the ECOWAS Treaty’s goal of promoting economic integration and cooperation among West African states.
The residence permit system has long been a bureaucratic hurdle, stifling economic growth and cultural exchange. abolishing it, ECOWAS can unlock the full potential of its citizens, fostering a culture of cooperation and mutual understanding.
However, this move must be accompanied by robust sensitization campaigns, effective border management, and regional cooperation to address concerns about security and national sovereignty.
The committees’ recommendations, including the deployment of officials to monitor and report incidents of extortion and malpractices, are crucial in ensuring the smooth implementation of the free movement protocols.
It is now up to ECOWAS member states to take action and implement this vision. We urge them to seize this opportunity, embracing a future where West Africans can live, work, and thrive without artificial barriers. A borderless West Africa is a prosperous West Africa.
