The 2025 China Women’s Film Festival recently opened at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, marking a significant celebration of women’s creativity, leadership, and resilience in the film industry. Organized by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, the event brought together esteemed diplomats, government officials, lawmakers, film enthusiasts, students, and gender advocates from both Nigeria and China.
In his remarks, His Excellency Zhou Hongyou of the Chinese Embassy highlighted the indispensable role women play in driving social development and progress. In his words, “Women are an indispensable force driving social development and progress,”. He emphasized China’s commitment to gender equality. He cited notable achievements in China’s women’s development, including over 690 million women achieving moderate prosperity and women making up 43% of the total employed population.
Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs, praised the festival for strengthening the deep-rooted friendship between Nigeria and China. “The China Women’s Film Festival is a distinguished platform that celebrates creativity, resilience, and the power of storytelling to connect nations and inspire change,” she stated. She emphasized the potential for partnerships in capacity building, creative industry exchange, and women-led entrepreneurship.
Hon. Gabriel Saleh Zock, Chairman of the House Committee on Arts, Culture & Creative Economy, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to empowering women and youth in the creative industry. “We believe that when women tell their stories, societies evolve; when nations exchange their art, peace and prosperity follow,” he said, pledging support for legislation promoting gender inclusion and creative financing.
The four-day festival will showcase films highlighting women’s stories of resilience, family, and ambition. Movies such as “Dumpling Queen,” “Her Story,” “Song of Spring,” and “The Beautiful Life” will take center stage, underscoring the shared humanity that unites both nations.
This event is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and collaboration in promoting women’s empowerment and advancing societal progress.
