China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cultural and film cooperation, with the screening of the award-winning Chinese documentary “Rooting” at the Zuma International Film Festival in Abuja.

Counsellor Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that it’s not only a cinematic feast but also a dialogue between civilizations and a testament to the long-standing friendship between China and Nigeria.

The documentary, produced over four years, tells the story of a villager in Yunnan Province who escapes poverty through targeted government support, resonating deeply with Nigeria’s aspirations for national development and a better life.

Yang highlighted the growing partnership between China and Nigeria, citing the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024 and the designation of 2026 as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

The event showcased China’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to sharing stories that promote mutual understanding and empathy.

Nollywood’s Managing Director, Ali Nuhu, praised the partnership, noting that the Zuma Festival provides a vital platform for cultural exchange and mutual learning between filmmakers from different backgrounds.

The festival also featured another Chinese documentary, “SHENZHOU 13,” filmed by Chinese astronauts, further solidifying China-Nigeria cultural ties.
