China has thrown its weight behind Nigeria, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s threat of military action over alleged persecution of Christians. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized China’s firm support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights,” Mao stated. “We oppose the wanton threat of sanctions and use of force.”
Mao’s comments come after Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and his warning that the US would stop aid and potentially take military action if Nigeria doesn’t address the alleged persecution of Christians.
China’s stance reinforces its longstanding policy of non-interference and strengthens its strategic partnership with Nigeria. The move is seen as a significant diplomatic win for Nigeria, which has been grappling with Trump’s allegations.
