ECOWAS Appoint New Commissioner for Internal Services

In a significant development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has appointed Dr Habibu Yaya Bappah as its new Commissioner for Internal Services.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on December 12, 2025, with Hon Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves, President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, administering the oath of office.

Dr Bappah, a seasoned Nigerian diplomat, brings over two decades of experience to the table, having served in various capacities within the ECOWAS Commission. His appointment is seen as a boost to the organization’s efforts to enhance institutional effectiveness, administrative efficiency, and good governance.

As Commissioner for Internal Services, Dr Bappah is expected to leverage his expertise in administration, financial management, and change management to drive reforms and improve the Commission’s overall performance.

“I am honored to take on this new challenge,” Dr Bappah said in his acceptance speech. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance the ECOWAS agenda and promote regional integration.”

Dr Bappah’s appointment is part of ECOWAS’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its institutional framework and promote good governance in the region.
