In a move to alleviate the suffering of flood victims in Bauchi State, the ECOWAS Commission has launched a humanitarian aid initiative valued at $200,000. This effort is part of the Commission’s Emergency Flood Response Project, targeting 1,000 households across six Local Government Areas.
Led by Dr. Sintiki Tarfa-Ugbe, Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, the ECOWAS Commission has distributed relief packages to beneficiaries, including a cash transfer of 75,000 naira per household, along with food and non-food items. This intervention aims to mitigate the hardships caused by the devastating floods, provide immediate relief, and foster resilience among the affected communities.
The distribution of relief materials, which commenced on December 15, 2024, demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in the region. This initiative is a testament to the ECOWAS Commission’s dedication to promoting humanitarian cooperation and solidarity among its member states.
In a similar gesture, the ECOWAS Commission had earlier donated N640 million to Nigeria to support victims of flood disasters in Borno and Bauchi states.¹ The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Abel Enitan, had thanked the ECOWAS Commission for its continued support, pledging to utilize the donations judiciously.
As the ECOWAS Commission continues to provide vital assistance to flood victims in Bauchi State, it is clear that their efforts are bringing hope and relief to those affected by the devastating floods.
