The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament has been called upon to intensify efforts in promoting projects that support women and girls affected by floods and conflicts ravaging the sub-region.

Nigerian Member of Parliament, Blessing Onu, made the plea during the Committee of Conference meeting ahead of the 2024 third Extra-Ordinary Session and Second Parliamentary Seminar.

Recent floods in Borno State, Nigeria, and Niger Republic have left over 1 million people affected, hundreds dead, and thousands displaced.

“The Parliamentary Committee on Women and Gender is disturbed about the plight of civilians, particularly women, affected by these disasters,” Onu said.

ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) will organize a symposium on “Empowering Women through Financial Inclusion” on October 1, 2024, to address challenges women face in accessing financial services.

The ECOWAS Parliament will also conduct capacity-building seminars for new members and review the 2023 budget and mid-term budget for 2024.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima emphasized the need for strategic planning to drive economic growth and development in the region.

With these initiatives, ECOWAS Parliament aims to promote gender equality and support those affected by floods and conflicts.

“The seminar will enable our new members to hit the ground running, making informed decisions that benefit our citizens,” Ibrahima said.

The 2024 third Extra-Ordinary Session and Second Parliamentary Seminar commenced yesterday in Lomé, Togo.
