The ECOWAS Commission showcased its Interconnected System for the Management of Goods in Transit (SIGMAT) at the World Customs Organization’s 2026 Technology Conference.
SIGMAT, a flagship regional initiative, aims to modernize customs transit through digitalization and cross-border system interconnectivity. Mrs. Aissata Yameogo Koffi, Principal Programme Officer for Tariffs and Customs Regimes, presented SIGMAT’s evolution, highlighting progress, challenges, and solutions.
The system has significantly impacted transit procedures in deployed Member States, delivering tangible benefits. Its success has sparked interest from non-ECOWAS countries, seeking to adopt SIGMAT.
ECOWAS is implementing the SIGMAT e-Hub, a secure infrastructure for electronic message exchange among customs administrations, enabling interoperable corridor operations.
The conference, themed “Customs Agility in a Complex World,” brought together 1,500 stakeholders to explore digital frontiers. ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing customs procedures, facilitating trade, and harmonizing regional procedures.
SIGMAT’s success demonstrates ECOWAS’ dedication to regional integration and trade facilitation, setting a blueprint for customs modernization worldwide.
