The European Union has announced a significant increase in humanitarian aid for the Greater Horn of Africa and West and Central Africa, allocating €258 million to address urgent needs in the regions. This funding will support vulnerable populations affected by conflict, natural hazards, forced displacement, food and nutrition insecurity, and poor access to basic services.
The EU will allocate €107.5 million to the Greater Horn of Africa, where approximately 70 million people urgently need humanitarian aid. The region is plagued by conflicts, including the crisis in Sudan, which drives humanitarian needs both within the country and across the region. The funding will provide essential assistance, including:
Food and Livelihoods: Support for agriculture and livestock to ensure food security,Nutrition, Emergency nutrition programs to prevent malnutrition,Healthcare, Access to medical care and health services
Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, Improved access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion
In West and Central Africa, €150.6 million will be used to support humanitarian responses in countries affected by ongoing insecurity and conflict. The region faces complex and protracted humanitarian crises, particularly in the Central Sahel and Lake Chad areas. The funding will focus on: Food Assistance: Emergency food aid to vulnerable populations, Healthcare, Medical care and health services for those in need, Education: Support for education programs and infrastructure, Water and Sanitation: Improved access to clean water and sanitation facilities
The EU’s humanitarian aid allocation for Africa in 2025 totals €750 million, demonstrating its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations. Commissioner Hadja Lahbib emphasized the EU’s role as a reliable partner, providing emergency assistance to Africa’s most vulnerable populations amidst complex challenges and growing humanitarian needs.
