The European Union (EU) is celebrating a major milestone, marking 30 years since Austria, Finland, and Sweden joined the bloc. In a speech delivered by EU Council President António Costa, the occasion was hailed as a testament to the power of European integration and unity.
Addressing the gathering, President Costa highlighted the significant contributions of the three member states, noting that their accession had enriched the EU, strengthened its internal dialogue, and enhanced its global influence. He cited examples of their impact, including Finland’s role in launching the Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice, Sweden’s contribution to the European Pillar of Social Rights, and Austria’s efforts to protect Jewish communities.
The event also served as an opportunity to reflect on the benefits of EU membership for Austria, Finland, and Sweden. President Costa noted that their integration into the EU had driven economic growth, job creation, and trade relations, with real GDP growing by 58-85% and employment increasing by 31-35% since accession.
Looking to the future, President Costa emphasized the importance of further enlargement and deeper integration, particularly for Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkan countries. He stressed that the EU must remain committed to a rules-based international order and continue to promote peace, stability, and prosperity across the continent.
The celebration was marked by a sense of unity and optimism, with President Costa praising the EU’s ability to bring countries together and promote shared values. “We are a union of diversity, with each member state having its own culture,” he said, highlighting the unique contributions of Austria, Finland, and Sweden to the EU’s identity.
As the EU looks to the future, the 30th anniversary of Austria, Finland, and Sweden’s membership serves as a powerful reminder of the benefits of European integration and the importance of continued cooperation and enlargement.
