Fulfil your part of agreements, memoranda – ASUU tells Nigerian Govt

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Kano zone has urged the Federal Government to resolve all outstanding issues from its agreements and memoranda with the union to ensure industrial harmony in Nigeria.

Zonal Coordinator Abdulqadir Muhammad made this appeal during a news briefing on Thursday in Kano, following a zonal meeting that included representatives from seven universities in the region.

He highlighted key issues such as the renegotiation of the Federal Government-ASUU 2009 agreement, funding for the revitalization of public universities to achieve global standards, and respect for university autonomy, among others.

Muhammad noted that the failure to sign the draft renegotiated agreement has led to widespread dissatisfaction and declining morale among ASUU members, contributing to brain drain.

“Therefore, ASUU Kano zone calls on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to respect the provisions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) convention, to which Nigeria is a signatory,” he stated.

He also urged the release of funds for salary arrears, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and withheld salaries.

Regarding university autonomy, ASUU called on the Kano State Government to immediately reinstate the arbitrarily dissolved governing councils of the two state-owned universities.

Additionally, the ASUU Kano zone called on state governments to follow the presidential directive resulting from a court ruling to exempt tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and to cease the illegal enrollment of their members into related platforms.
