In a poignant farewell ceremony, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, the Defence Adviser of the Republic of Ghana to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, brought his distinguished tour of duty to a close. With a deep sense of gratitude and nostalgia, Rear Admiral Bessing reflected on his time in Nigeria, highlighting the strong bonds forged between the two nations and the significant strides made in regional security cooperation.
During his tenure, Rear Admiral Bessing played a pivotal role in fortifying the security and defence relationship between Ghana and Nigeria. Through his tireless efforts, he fostered a spirit of collaboration and cooperation that transcended borders, contributing to the stability and security of the region. His work with Nigerian authorities and fellow defence advisers was instrumental in advancing ECOWAS’ regional cooperation initiatives, particularly in tackling maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea.
Rear Admiral Bessing’s departure marks the beginning of a new chapter in his illustrious career. Having been appointed as the new Chief of the Naval Staff of the Ghana Navy, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. Committed to building on the foundations laid during his tenure as Defence Adviser, Rear Admiral Bessing is poised to drive initiatives that will enhance the operational capabilities of the Ghana Navy and contribute to regional maritime security. He said, “I recall walking into a room full of seasoned diplomats and defence advisers from across the world and immediately being struck by the spirit of collegiality and openness that defined our work here,” Rear Admiral Bessing reminisced, highlighting the collaborative spirit that characterized his time in Nigeria. In his words, “As I take leave of this assignment, I do so with gratitude and optimism. I am humbled to inform you all that I am now the newly appointed Chief of the Naval Staff of the Ghana Navy, an appointment I have assumed with a deep sense of duty and resolve,” he announced, looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Rear Admiral Bessing extended his heartfelt appreciation to the Ghanaian government for entrusting him with the role of Defence Adviser. He also expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian government and people for their warm hospitality and cooperation during his tenure. His commendation of his staff and colleagues underscored the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving diplomatic objectives.
As Rear Admiral Bessing departs Nigeria, he leaves behind a legacy of cooperation and partnership that will continue to nurture the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
