Raphael Oni

China is rolling out blueprints on the basic principles of peaceful coexistence to counter global challenges. China is helping to build the capacity in many nations, in which Nigeria as a country has benefited tremendously since both countries began diplomatic relations in 1971.

As a diplomatic reporter who has been on this field for over 15 years of practicing in the area, I can say categorically that China is involved in building human capacity on daily basis. China is helping in building many Nigerians in various fields, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening bilateral relations between China and Nigeria.

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests I stand before you today as a witness to the transformative power of international cooperation and capacity building. Over the years, I have had the privilege of observing and reporting on China’s efforts to develop the capacities of Nigerians in various fields.

From agriculture to technology, education to healthcare, China’s investment in Nigeria’s human capital has been remarkable. I have seen firsthand the impact of Chinese training programs, scholarships, and collaborations on Nigerian individuals and communities. These initiatives have not only enhanced the skills and knowledge of Nigerians but have also fostered greater understanding and cooperation between our two nations. They have demonstrated that, together, we can achieve far more than we can alone.

As a media practitioner, I have a responsibility to share these stories and highlight the positive impact of international cooperation. I urge my colleagues to join me in showcasing the successes of China-Nigeria collaboration and the benefits of capacity building. Let us continue to promote greater understanding and cooperation between our nations.

In today’s interconnected world, from climate change to poverty, from disease outbreaks to political conflicts, collective efforts and collaboration from all nations are needed to create a better future for our planet and all its inhabitants. Addressing global challenges requires a long-term perspective and sustained effort. It is not enough to simply respond to crises as they arise; we must also invest in preventative measures and build resilience to future challenges by supporting education, research and development in fields such as renewable energy, public health and conflict resolution. It also means promoting policies that prioritize the well-being of people and the planet over short-term economic gains. To create a more just and sustainable world for all, one needs to take a holistic approach to global challenges.

On the International front,  the exploit of the Chinese government cannot be over emphasize. Ten years ago, President Xi Jinping propounded the idea of building a global community with a shared future, emphasizing cooperation and collaboration among nations, which seeks to foster mutual understanding, respect and peaceful coexistence to address global challenges. This proposal reveals that China aims to promote sustainable development, economic prosperity and cultural exchange on a global scale, and reflects China’s commitment to multilateralism and the belief that shared prosperity benefits all nations. It is a call for unity, solidarity, and collective action to create a better future for humanity.

Overall, China’s proposal for a shared future provides a hopeful vision for the world, one that prioritizes collaboration over conflict and mutual benefit over individual gain. This requires a change in mindset from competition to cooperation and from isolationism to openness. It is crucial for countries to recognize that their individual interests are interlinked with the interests of the global community. working toward shared objectives, nations can create win-win situations that benefit all parties involved.

Furthermore, we must acknowledge that addressing global challenges is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Different regions and communities face unique challenges that require tailored approaches. In Nigeria, China is building infrastructure to help the economy. Some of  China’s infrastructure development projects in Nigeria includes, building of Railways, Roads, Airports, Seaports, power generation, water supply, telecommunications, industrial zones to mention few. This gesture is helping majority of Nigerians create conducive environment for development.

It is essential to involve local stakeholders and empower them to take ownership of solutions that work for their specific context. This means investing in capacity-building and providing resources for local innovation and entrepreneurship. promoting diversity and inclusivity in our approach to global challenges, we can ensure that everyone has a voice and a stake in creating a better future for all.

Just as China says in A Global Community of Shared Future: China’s Proposals and Actions, which was released in September 2023: There is no iron law that dictates that a rising power will inevitably seek hegemony. China has never accepted that once a country becomes strong enough, it will invariably seek hegemony. China understands the lesson of history — that hegemony preludes decline. We pursue development and revitalization through our own efforts, rather than invasion or expansion. And everything we do is for the purpose of providing a better life for our people, all the while creating more development opportunities for the entire world instead of superseding or subjugating others.

Ladies and gentle men, China- Nigeria relations is on a win-win situation thereby ensuring that developmental projects are top on the agenda of the relationship. developing Nigeria’s infrastructure, China is supporting Nigeria’s economic development and helping to realize its potential as a regional hub. These projects has resulted to boost economic growth, Boost economic growth,Improve connectivity and transportation, Enhance energy supply, increase access to basic services, attracting foreign investment, Creating jobs and many more.

Let me conclude by saying China has consistently championed equity and justice, and remains committed to friendly cooperation with other countries, she is playing significant role  in building the capacity of Nigerians through various programs, such as awarding scholarships, Training programs, capacity building workshops like the just concluded enhancing diplomatic reporting in Nigeria held for journalist in Abuja, Infrastructure development,Agricultural cooperation, Healthcare cooperation, Economic cooperation , Cultural exchange programs, Language training and Research collaborations . Through these programs, China is helping to build the capacity of Nigerians in various fields, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening bilateral relations between China and Nigeria.
