Japan and ECOWAS Strengthen Ties for West African Development

Mr. TSUJI Kiyoto, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, met with Mrs. Damtien L. TCHINTCHIBIDJA, Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), on August 23, 2024. The meeting aimed to strengthen ties between Japan and ECOWAS, promoting economic integration, peace, and stability in West Africa.

State Minister Tsuji expressed gratitude for ECOWAS’ leadership in economic integration, while Mrs. Tchintchibidja appreciated Japan’s contributions to ECOWAS. Both sides agreed to continue working together to strengthen connectivity, peace, and stability, as well as economic cooperation in West Africa.

The meeting confirmed the deepening of Japan-ECOWAS relations ahead of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) 9 next year. The meeting marks a significant step forward in Japan’s commitment to supporting West African development, through its partnership with ECOWAS.
