NIGERIA, EU TO DEEPEN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Nigeria and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership, with a focus on economic diversification, peace, and security.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Tuesday.

According to Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed described the EU as a critical development partner, highlighting cooperation in trade, peace, governance, climate action, and digital economy.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is committed to economic diversification away from oil dependence,” Ambassador Ahmed said, emphasizing priority sectors such as agriculture, digital economy, and climate-smart development.

EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot commended Nigeria’s priorities, announcing preparations for a Nigeria-EU Ministerial Meeting in March 2026 to advance cooperation.

“The EU’s Global Gateway Strategy seeks to leverage development assistance to attract private investment,” Mignot said, highlighting EU-backed investments in infrastructure, digital connectivity, and clean energy.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law, and UN principles, expressing confidence in the continued strengthening of Nigeria-EU relations.
