Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, met with the British Foreign Secretary today to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation between both countries. The meeting at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) focused on shared priorities including trade, investment, security, education, migration, and climate action.
Ambassador Tuggar described the engagement as “constructive and forward-looking,” noting that it reflected the long-standing friendship and shared democratic values guiding Nigeria-UK relations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration that delivers tangible benefits to their citizens.
The talks explored new areas of economic partnership, ongoing cooperation in defence and governance, and the vital role of people-to-people ties. The contributions of the Nigerian diaspora to strengthening the relationship were also acknowledged and discussed.
The talks focused on boosting innovation-driven growth, improving bilateral security efforts, and exploring ways to enhance intelligence-sharing mechanisms to address insurgency and organized crime.
The UK has also committed to supporting Nigeria’s economic reforms through technical assistance, including expertise on public finance management, tax policy formulation, and improving public financial management systems. Additionally, the two nations are exploring ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as climate change, education, and migration.
The meeting concluded with both sides pledging to maintain regular dialogue and follow up on agreed areas of cooperation. Ambassador Tuggar’s visit forms part of Nigeria’s wider diplomatic outreach aimed at advancing mutual interests, promoting development, and reinforcing its longstanding partnerships on the global stage.
