Nigeria’s Intervention in The Gambia’s Education Sector Yields Positive Results

The Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology of The Gambia, Prof. Pierre Gomez, has expressed his country’s gratitude to the Federal Government of Nigeria for its intervention in The Gambia’s education sector. According to Prof. Gomez, Nigeria’s support has yielded significant dividends, particularly in the areas of skills, innovation, and enterprise development.ยน

During a visit to the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps in Abuja, Prof. Gomez revealed that the injection of Nigerian Engineering Professors into the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) in The Gambia has led to a remarkable increase in enrollment, from 47 to over 200 students in the last academic season.

The Gambian Minister also commended the professional expertise of the TAC Volunteers serving in his country, noting that they have brought a new wave of thinking and innovation to the education sector. He further requested Nigeria’s continued support in mentoring teachers and administrators in The Gambia, particularly in the area of education.

In response, the Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, assured The Gambia of Nigeria’s continuous support in addressing its educational needs. He congratulated Prof. Gomez on his efforts to improve the higher education sector in The Gambia and pledged to provide the requested assistance in the weeks ahead.

This development highlights the strong bilateral relations between Nigeria and The Gambia, as well as Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the development of education in African countries.
