Uniting Against Corruption: NACIWA’s 6th Annual General Meeting Kicks Off in Abuja

In a significant step towards combating corruption in West Africa, the 6th Annual General Meeting of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) commenced at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. The three-day event, themed “Implementing the ECOWAS Protocol against corruption towards strengthening Institutions for Regional Unity,” brought together high-level officials, development partners, and anti-corruption experts to discuss effective strategies for tackling corruption in the region.

Nigeria’s Vice-President, H.E. Kashim Shettima, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and commended ECOWAS for its collaborative efforts with NACIWA and member states in driving the anti-corruption agenda. He urged ECOWAS member states to ratify and implement the ECOWAS Protocol against corruption, emphasizing the need for collective action.

ECOWAS Commissioner, Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, highlighted the significance of the ECOWAS Protocol on the Fight Against Corruption, adopted in 2001. He stressed the importance of harmonized legal frameworks, robust institutional mechanisms, and enhanced cooperation among member states to combat corruption effectively.

NACIWA President, Mr. Ola Olukayode, emphasized the network’s commitment to supporting member states in their anti-corruption efforts. The meeting provided a platform for sharing best practices, exchanging ideas, and strengthening regional unity against corruption.

As the meeting progressed, participants engaged in discussions, workshops, and panel sessions, focusing on topics such as whistleblower protection, corruption risk assessment, and the implementation of anti-corruption instruments. The event underscored the need for sustained collaboration and collective action to address the complex challenges posed by corruption in West Africa.

Through NACIWA’s efforts, the region is taking a significant step towards creating a unified front against corruption, promoting good governance, and fostering inclusive development. As the meeting concluded, participants departed with renewed commitment and determination to combat corruption, ensuring a brighter future for West Africa.
