US Ambassador Richard M. Mills Jr. kicked off the 23rd annual Education USA College Fair in Abuja on Tuesday, highlighting the strong people-to-people ties between the United States and Nigeria.
The event brought together representatives from 50 US colleges and universities, showcasing the diverse range of educational opportunities available to Nigerian students.
Ambassador Mills said, “Nigeria sends more students to the United States than any other African country, with over 17,600 students enrolled in more than 970 institutions across all 50 states and the District of Columbia last year,”.
Texas emerged as the most popular destination, with many Nigerian students drawn to the state’s renowned institutions.The annual College Fair has successfully increased the number of excellent applicants to US institutions and boosted financial aid and scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students.
Last year, students advised by EducationUSA Nigeria received over $30 million in financial aid, scholarships, and assistantships, with 73 students supported through the Opportunity Funds Program in Abuja and Lagos.
Ambassador Mills emphasized the importance of access to quality education for equitable economic growth, improved health indicators, advanced gender equality, and socioeconomic progress. “A prosperous and stable Nigeria benefits both Nigeria and the United States, and it all starts with education,” he stated.
The US Ambassador encouraged Nigerian students to explore the opportunities available, citing cultural exchange, diverse institutions, lifetime friendships, and career opportunities as key benefits of studying in America.
“Studying in the United States creates new friendships that will last a lifetime. You will experience the tapestry of American culture and hopefully get to understand us as Americans better. And you will share your country’s rich and vibrant culture with your new American friends,” Ambassador Mills added. The Education USA College Fair provides a platform for Nigerian students to connect with US institutions, discuss career possibilities, and access resources for international education.
With the US Embassy’s Public Diplomacy team and Consular section representatives on hand, attendees gained valuable insights into the application process and requirements for studying in America. As the relationship between the US and Nigeria continues to grow, education remains a vital component of people-to-people diplomacy.
