China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho from January 7 to 12, as part of the country’s annual tradition of prioritizing Africa in its diplomatic engagements. This marks the 36th consecutive year that Africa will be the destination of the Chinese Foreign Minister’s first overseas trip of the year, underscoring China’s commitment to strengthening ties with the continent.

Notably, Ethiopia is home to the African Union Headquarters and hosts numerous diplomatic missions, making it an ideal location for China to demonstrate its commitment to Africa. During his visit, Wang Yi will attend the launching ceremony of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges at the AU Headquarters, highlighting the importance of people-to-people diplomacy in fostering cooperation and understanding between China and Africa.

Wang’s tour is expected to focus on enhancing economic cooperation, promoting development initiatives, and supporting Africa’s efforts to achieve sustainable growth and stability. The visit will also provide an opportunity for China to reinforce its commitment to Africa’s development and strengthen its position as a key partner on the continent.

China’s engagement with Africa is expected to boost economic cooperation, with potential deals on infrastructure, energy, and technology. The visit reinforces China’s strategic presence in Africa, potentially shaping global governance and development narratives.

China’s support could enhance Africa’s stability and development, aligning with AU Agenda 2063 goals.
