Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to multilateralism at the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Speaking on “The Role of the Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism,” Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to a fairer, more inclusive global order.
Tuggar praised BRICS for granting Nigeria Partner Country status, citing it as an affirmation of the bloc’s commitment to inclusive multilateralism. He highlighted the need for reforms to address complex challenges such as climate change, technological disruption, and global economic instability. The Nigerian Foreign Minister noted that BRICS offers a viable, collaborative alternative to outdated international structures, pointing to initiatives like the New Development Bank.
Ambassador Tuggar said Nigeria is ready to contribute to BRICS goals in areas such as peace and security, sustainable development, and health cooperation.
On South South Cooperation, Tuggar emphasized the importance of South-South Cooperation, describing the Global South as a driving force behind inclusive and sustainable solutions. Nigeria’s youthful population, dynamic tech sector, and strategic geographic position make it a natural partner in advancing BRICS goals.
Tuggar called for urgent reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to reflect the aspirations and realities of the 21st century. “Nigeria is ready to help shape a new era of global cooperation grounded in equity, solidarity, and mutual respect,” he affirmed.
