The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (Rtd), mni, PSC, NPM, has emphasized the importance of self-development for police officers in Nigeria. Speaking at a Strategic Leadership and Change Management Retreat for Divisional Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Argungu stressed that individual commitment to self-improvement is crucial for distinguishing great officers from average ones.¹
The PSC Chairman outlined four key areas where officers should focus their personal development efforts:
Intellectual Growth: Engage in continuous learning through reading, research, and participation in professional development programs. Enroll in relevant online courses, attend seminars, and obtain higher academic qualifications.
Leadership Intelligence: Develop leadership skills to effectively manage and lead teams.
Ethics and Integrity: Strengthen moral character and maintain integrity in public service.
Digital Literacy: Enhance digital skills and adapt to emerging technologies.
Argungu emphasized that self-development is not limited to skills and knowledge but also includes strengthening moral character and maintaining integrity in public service. He noted that sustainable institutional progress is driven by the growth of its people, and self-development is no longer a luxury but a duty.
